Bunch Verts is a four vertical concept run out of a tight Bunch alignment in Shotgun, designed to stress deep safeties and stack cornerbacks with clean vertical releases off the bunch. All three bunch receivers push vertically while the backside X runs a fourth vertical stem, creating natural picks against man coverage and seams against zone drops. This is a pure dropback pass play built as both a man beater and zone beater, specifically labeled a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression working from the deep middle seam route to the outside vertical, then working back to the checkdown or scramble drill if the safeties rotate to take away the seams.
Check the pre snap safety alignment first, two high shells with safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which opens up the seam and outside vertical against the natural hole in zone coverage. Watch the cornerback press technique on the bunch side, soft or bail technique usually means zone drops are coming and the seam route will have room, while hard press alignment often signals man coverage or a potential bunch blitz look. Key the linebacker depth and width before the snap, shallow linebackers who stay tight to the box are vulnerable to the seam routes splitting the zone, while linebackers who bail deep pre snap are showing you a zone drop that can be exploited with the outside verticals. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep lurk or robber technique in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this play, if you see a user spy sitting on the seam route, work the progression to the outside vertical or the backside X instead. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 quarters shells with safeties that stay patient and match verticals, and it is especially vulnerable to a well timed nano blitz since the four verts concept requires time for the deep routes to develop and offers minimal underneath protection help.
Identify the safety shell before the snap, if you see two high safeties cheat your eyes to the seam runner since Cover 2 has the biggest void between the corner and safety on the outside vertical routes.
Against Cover 3, target the deep middle seam route first because the middle of the field safety in Cover 3 has to choose between the seam and the post, and the bunch alignment creates natural rub routes that slow down zone defenders getting to their drops.
Hot route the backside X into a comeback or dig if you diagnose single high man coverage pre snap, this gives you a built in adjustment against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variants where four verts can get muddy in tight windows.
Pair this play with Bunch Sail or Bunch Trail in your play calling sequence, running Bunch Verts on early downs to bait aggressive safety rotation, then coming back with the sail concept to attack the flat and corner route if the defense starts jumping the verticals.
Save this play for medium to long yardage situations on second or third down, the deep shot potential makes it risky on third and short where a quicker hitting concept like Curls Attack or Stick would convert more reliably.
