Jets Dbltrail is a man beater out of the Shotgun Bunch formation built around double trail routes stacked to one side of the bunch, designed to create natural rub picks against man defenders. The concept sends receivers on staggered trail routes with a shallow crosser underneath, forcing man corners to fight through traffic while a deep route occupies the safety over top. The primary read progression starts with the trail route closest to the line for the quick rub separation, then works to the second trail route breaking behind it, and finally to the backside or checkdown option if both trail routes are blanketed.

Defensive Reads

Identify press man coverage on the bunch receivers pre-snap since the trail design is meant to exploit rub picks against tight man technique. Watch for a single high safety who has to widen or bite on the deep route, which opens the window for the trail routes underneath. If the defense shows two deep safeties with corners playing off, expect the trail routes to be picked off by zone drops, so be ready to check to a different concept. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers for lurk or spy tendencies since a user controlled linebacker sitting on the shallow trail can jump the primary read. Watch blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge, since the trail routes take time to develop and a fast blitz can force the quarterback off his first read before the rub separation happens.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the bunch receivers with no visible zone rotation from the safeties.

Use motion or a quick glance at the linebacker alignment to confirm if this is man match or true man, since the trail concept loses value against pattern match zone.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell, since the trail concept alone will not consistently beat true zone drops.

This play works best on early downs and short to medium yardage situations where you want to bait man coverage before setting up Bunch Verts or PA Divide Wheels later in a series.
