Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the cornerback over the bunch is playing outside leverage or shaded inside, since inside leverage invites the trail concept to work outside for an explosive gain. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into shallow zone drops immediately, the trail routes will not have room to settle and you should reset to the backside crosser. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, since he can undercut the trail route if you throw it too early. This play struggles against pattern-match zone coverages like Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Match, because defenders will pass off the trail combo instead of getting picked or rubbed. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap and rolls to a single high shell after the snap, expect a blitz, and be ready to get the ball out quickly on the shallow trail route.

Check pre-snap for man coverage by motioning the bunch tag receiver across the formation and watching if a defender follows him across the formation.
This play excels versus press man and Cover 1 because the trail concept naturally creates separation once the receivers stack and break.
On third and medium, prioritize the shallow trail route since it settles in the void created by underneath defenders chasing the top trail.
