Jet Pull Shallow is a play-action style pass concept out of the Shotgun Bunch formation that uses jet motion across the backfield to sell run action before the QB drops to throw. Off the bunch alignment, the play sends one receiver on a shallow crossing route underneath, a second receiver on a deep out breaking to the sideline, and a third receiver on a deep dig that sits behind the crossing route, while the inline receiver runs a short pivot or comeback near the line of scrimmage. This is a man beater concept, since the shallow cross creates natural rub traffic against man defenders and the deep out and dig stretch the field horizontally against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the shallow cross underneath, works to the pivot route if the shallow is taken away, and climbs to the deep out or dig if linebackers and corners bite on the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebacker closest to the bunch at the snap, since a hard trigger toward the shallow cross signals man coverage or a robber technique that can be exploited by the deep dig. Check safety depth before the snap, since two deep safeties suggest a shell that struggles against the shallow cross but can rally on the deep out if the corner sinks quickly. Look for a cornerback pressed on the outside receiver, which indicates man coverage and makes the shallow cross a near automatic completion due to natural rub from the bunch traffic. Be wary of user linebackers sitting in the shallow zone with lurk intent, since a smart defender can jump the crossing route and create a turnover if the QB does not account for the underneath threat. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can shut down the pivot route and force the QB to hold the ball longer, so identify flat defenders pre-snap and be ready to climb the ladder to the dig or deep out instead.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the motion man, which tips man coverage. If the defense stays put on motion, expect zone coverage and prioritize the deep out and dig routes over the shallow. Hot route the shallow cross into a quick drag if you are facing an aggressive blitz look, since it gives the QB a fast outlet against extra pass rushers. This play works best on second and medium to third and long, where the combination of shallow, dig, and deep out gives multiple sticks to the marker.
