Off the bunch alignment, the outside receiver runs a corner route up top while the two inside bunch receivers work a curl and a flat/slant combo underneath, and the backside X on the far left runs an out breaking route to hold the corner. The lone red route shows the primary receiver running a quick slant into a curl/flat area near the sticks, giving the QB a fast rhythm throw right off the snap. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to hit soft spots in the underneath zones (Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4) before linebackers can sink and wall off the curl. Primary progression starts with the curl/slant flat combo from the bunch, then works to the flat route for the checkdown, and finally to the deep corner route if the defense bites hard underneath and vacates the top of the zone.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth over the bunch formation, since a single high safety often signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which leave the underneath curl and flat vulnerable. Watch the corner aligned over the backside X, since if he is playing off coverage he is conceding the out route, and if he presses he is daring you to beat him deep or hot route to a quicker breaking route. Post snap, key the flow of the underneath linebackers, since if they sink too fast into the curl zone the flat route behind them opens up immediately for an easy checkdown. This play struggles against aggressive man coverage with a slot corner sitting on the bunch, since there is no natural rub or pick built into these particular routes to separate against tight man leverage. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone lurking the slant or curl, since a smart user will bait the quick throw and jump the route, so be ready to move to the flat or the deep corner as an alternate answer.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the quick curl and flat combo settles in right around the sticks for an easy conversion.

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing zone by checking linebacker depth and corner alignment over the bunch, since this play is built to exploit soft zone drops rather than beat man coverage.

If you see Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells, throw the ball on time to the curl/slant combo before the underneath defenders can sink and close the window.

Hot route the backside X out route into a quick hitch or slant if you are facing press man to give yourself a faster answer than the developing out.

Pair this play with Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts in your play calling sequence, since both plays look similar out of the same bunch alignment but attack deeper zones, keeping defenders honest and forcing them to respect the corner route instead of jumping the underneath stuff.
