PA Post out of Shotgun Bunch is a play-action shot play built off the bunch alignment to sell run action and attack downfield. The bunch receivers release into a post, a deep out breaking to the sideline, and a shallow crosser working underneath, while the backside route (red) is the primary post shooting up the seam toward the deep middle. The QB's first read is the post, working to the underneath crosser as a check down if the safety rotates over the top, and the out route serves as the boundary clear out or zone beater against a two high shell. This is fundamentally a man beater off the bunch traffic, since the tight release creates natural picks that make it hard for man defenders to stay attached through the break.

Defensive Reads

Identify whether the defense is playing single high or two high safety pre-snap, since single high leaves the post vulnerable to a big play over the middle. Watch the flow of the linebackers after the play fake, if they bite hard on the run action the post window opens up faster against man coverage. Key the cornerback aligned over the bunch, if he is playing outside leverage in man the post has an easier release, but if he sits inside he can jump the route and create a turnover opportunity. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field or lurking in the passing lane, since this play struggles against a robber technique or a spy sitting in the throwing lane of the post. This play is best countered by teams running Cover 3 or Cover 4 match with disciplined safety help over the top, since that forces the QB to check down to the crosser or out route instead of hitting the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Use this on early down and distance situations like first or second and short where the defense expects run action, since the play fake off shotgun freezes linebackers and opens the post window. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety look to attack the post immediately since the middle of the field is more vulnerable. If the defense shows two high shells, hot route the out route to a deep comeback or switch the crosser to a drag to manufacture more separation underneath. Pair this play with Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect the same bunch look multiple times, forcing them to guess between shallow and deep concepts. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or coverage rotation before the snap, then attack the post if you see man coverage leverage inside.
