Breakdown
HB Base is a designed dive run out of the Shotgun Bunch formation with 11 personnel, hitting the hole between the guard and center immediately at the snap. The bunch alignment to the right stacks three receivers to occupy defenders while the offensive line blocks straight ahead, giving the running back a downhill lane rather than a stretch or outside cut. This is a pure inside run play built to attack light boxes and gain tough yardage north and south, with the primary read being the interior gap the RB explodes into behind his line's initial surge.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and box count, stacked fronts with extra defenders near the line will blow this play up before it develops. Watch for a Mike linebacker keying the mesh point, quick diagnosis and downhill fills from the second level are the biggest threat to this dive. Man coverage on the bunch receivers frees up extra run support since defenders stay attached instead of reading the backfield. Zone shells with linebackers sitting soft can still crash down on the dive if they read run fast enough, so timing the snap count matters. A run blitz or nano blitz through the interior gaps is the primary defensive answer, if you see defensive tackles get quick penetration off the snap this play has almost no answer to cutback.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see a light box, five or fewer defenders in the box, since it lacks the blocking to handle stacked fronts.
Use it on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to keep the offense on schedule without overcommitting to a pass read.
Pair HB Base with Inside Zone and Read Option from this same set to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone run concepts out of the same bunch look.
Mix in Bunch Sail or Bunch Verts off the same formation after running HB Base a few times to punish linebackers who start creeping up expecting another dive.
Take the shotgun snap and burst through the hole immediately, this play has no misdirection so hesitation kills the play design.
