Breakdown

Slant Spacing runs out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset with a lone backside receiver running an isolated slant while the bunch side floods the underneath zones. The bunch releases into a spacing concept: one receiver settles quick to the flat area, another sits underneath in the middle void, and the third climbs vertically before working to the corner, stacking three levels against zone drops. There is no run action shown, this is a pure dropback pass designed as a Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater, with the primary read starting on the backside slant against man leverage before working to the spacing flat-to-corner combo on the bunch side.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify if the corner over the bunch is playing outside leverage or bailing into a deep third, this tells you whether the spacing flat route or the corner will be open. Watch the middle linebacker depth, if he sinks hard to cover the spacing hook zone that opens the backside slant window against man or zone alike. Key the flat defender out of the bunch, if he widens to the flat route the underneath spacing sitter becomes uncovered in the void. Look for a lurking safety or user linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the main defender who can jump the spacing concept and bait a throw. Cover 2 with aggressive corners can squeeze the slant route, so if you see two deep safeties with press corners, prioritize the bunch side flat and corner combo instead.

Usage Tips

Check the backside cornerback leverage before the snap, if he is playing outside shade or soft the slant wins immediately against man coverage.

Against zone shells with a deep third or four vertical safeties, read the flat defender first since spacing is designed to sit in the void behind him and in front of the deep defenders.

Use hot routes to convert the underside spacing route into a hitch if you see a blitz look, this gives your quarterback a quick answer versus pressure.

Pair this play with Verts Dig or Mtn Deep Post from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the short spacing concept once they start jumping the slant and flat routes.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the slant and flat combo give a high floor conversion option with the corner route as a big play alert.
