Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender or overhang player immediately after the snap since this is the actual RPO read the quarterback is using. Watch for a defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard on run action since that is the trigger for the automatic flat throw. Look for two high safety shells with the flat defender sitting in a shallow zone since that discipline takes away the easy flat conversion and forces a tougher run read. Identify man coverage on the bunch receivers by checking if a defender shadows the motion man, since man coverage often leaves the flat defender without help underneath. Watch for a blitzing linebacker off the edge since that can beat the run fit before the quarterback can process the RPO key, effectively shutting down both options.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone before the snap since the RPO read read defender will often follow the motion if it is man coverage. Take the flat throw immediately against six and seven man boxes with light second level defenders since the RPO key almost always steps up to fill the run gap. Hand the ball off against light boxes with the flat defender sitting deep or in a two high shell since that indicates a disciplined zone drop.
