Breakdown

Mtn Lead Toss is a motion-based toss run out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings a bunch receiver across to build extra numbers to the play side, and the diagram shows the tackle and lead blocker climbing to the second level while the HB takes the toss and follows the lead blocker on a path outside the tackle box, aiming to bend it upfield off the edge. This is a run play with no route combo to read, so the primary progression is a pre-snap numbers count to the play side followed by a post-snap read of the lead blocker's kick out or wrap on the first defender that shows in the alley.

Defensive Reads

Watch for overset alignments to the bunch side before the snap, since defenses that stack extra defenders there can blow up the edge before the lead blocker gets outside. Key the play side outside linebacker or slot corner, if he crashes hard on motion or sits in the run fit immediately, this play loses its blocking advantage. Look for a fast flowing linebacker who reads toss action and beats the puller to the point of attack, that is the main defensive answer to this concept. Против teams that user the strong safety down into the box, expect him to be the primary tackler if your lead blocker cannot get to him first. Heavy blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge away from the play tend to overrun the toss and open cutback lanes if the backside pursuit is not disciplined.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes or when the defense shows a shell that pulls a defender out of the alley with motion. Use the bunch motion to identify if the defense rotates or stays static, since a rotation to motion often means a defender vacates the edge you are attacking. Pair this with Mtn Fk Toss Verticals or Mtn PA Wheel Cross out of the same set so defenses respect the play-action look and cannot sit on the toss key. Take control of the lead blocker after the snap and manually steer him into the first color that shows in the alley rather than trusting the CPU logic. Best used on early downs or in short yardage when defenses are geared up to stop shotgun passing concepts from this set.
