Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset lines up with a bunch of three receivers to one side, a lone wideout backside, and the offset HB set in the backfield next to the QB. The line diagram shows a pure zone blocking scheme with the whole front sliding as a unit and the HB taking the handoff to press the mesh point and read his blocks. This is a run play, not a play-action look or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then bounce to the frontside gap if the backside is clogged, reading the double team at the point of attack before deciding to stick the run or bend it outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow at five yards or less they are likely keying run and will fill fast. Bunch alignment often draws man coverage rotation, if you see the strong safety cheat over the bunch pre-snap that is one less body in the run fit, favor the backside cutback. Post-snap, track the play side defensive end and 3-technique, if they get flat down the line without getting reached the frontside gap will close, bounce backside. Nano blitz packages and gap exchange stunts up front are the biggest threat to this play, if you see a defensive tackle crash inside pre-snap expect a quick disruption at the mesh point. Zone coverage shells with light boxes (two deep safeties with only six in the box) are the ideal shell to attack, stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz calls will shut this play down.

Use this out of 11 personnel on early downs when the defense shows a light box or is stacked against play-action tendencies from this formation.

Check the count in the box pre-snap, if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box audible out or motion the bunch to create a numbers advantage.

Pair this call with Mtn Inside Zone and Duo in the same set so defenders cannot key run fits off formation alone.

Hot route the backside WR into a quick out or slant if you expect a blitz, this holds the corner and discourages a fast crash off the edge.
