Mtn Spinner HB Inside is a spin motion run play out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset that uses jet style motion across the formation to disguise a downhill dive concept. The diagram shows the HB taking a spin exchange from the QB and hitting the inside gap behind a condensed line, with the offensive line blocking down and combo blocking to seal the interior gaps. This is a run play designed to hit fast off the mesh point, and the primary read is the mike linebacker's fill lane, if he flows hard to the motion side, cut back inside, if he stays home, press the called gap.
Defensive Reads
Key the mike linebacker's initial step, if he chases the jet motion across the formation the inside dive lane opens up immediately. Watch for defenses that stay disciplined and keep two linebackers stacked in the box, this eliminates the natural cutback and forces the back into traffic. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with aggressive fill linebackers are the most vulnerable to this concept because motion forces a flow read. If the defense shows a nano blitz look with a linebacker crashing the A-gap pre-snap, this play struggles since there is no time for the spin exchange to develop. User-controlled defenders sitting in a low lurk technique near the mesh point can blow up the play design before the HB gets to full speed.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to check if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender runs with the motion man across the formation you know its man coverage and the box should be lighter.
Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when defenses are still respecting play action and RPO tags from this same Mtn set.
Pair this with Mtn Fk Toss Verticals or Mtn PA Spinner later in a series so the defense has to respect the spin fake as a passing threat off the same look.
Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expect a quick fill and consider hot routing your TE or slot receiver for a quick outlet instead of forcing the run.
Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill on motion, trust the cutback lane since interior blockers are combo blocking to the second level.
