RZ PA Corner is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset, designed to hit a corner route in the red zone off run action. Post-snap the QB shows play-action, and the bunch releases with one receiver breaking outside on a corner route toward the boundary, a second receiver working an inside release before snapping off to the flat, and the backside receiver running a vertical seam up the numberless side of the field. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to the outside, works down to the flat/pivot man beater underneath if the corner is capped, and comes back to the backside vertical as the alert against single high shells.
Defensive Reads
Look for a single high safety pre-snap, that tells you the backside vertical is the alert route and the corner route will likely have help over the top Watch the cornerback aligned over the bunch, if he sinks into the flat as an underneath robber you know it is zone coverage and the corner route sits in the open window behind him Man coverage shows tight bump alignment on the bunch receivers, that is your cue to prioritize the flat/pivot route since it wins quickly off the traffic Any late safety rotation to the corner route side post-snap signals a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, get off that route fast and progress to the backside vertical A blitz look with the linebacker crashing downhill off the play-action fake means the flat route becomes the checkdown against man beater pressure
Usage Tips
Call this near the goal line or inside the 15 where the corner route has room to work but the defense is more condensed
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks, if the safety is rotated to the backside vertical, work the corner route to the bunch side immediately
Use the flat/pivot route as your answer against man coverage with tight underneath technique, it creates natural separation off the bunch traffic
If the cornerback on the corner route sits low expecting a hard flat, throw with anticipation before the break since red zone windows close fast
Pair this with Mtn Stick or Slant Spacing from the same set so the defense has to respect both quick game and shot plays, keeping the safety honest against the corner route
