Fk Toss Slide is a play-action pass out of the Shotgun Bunch Str Offset formation that sells a toss run to the offset back before the QB pulls and looks downfield. From the bunch alignment, the two inside receivers stem into deep breaking routes: one runs a deep in from the backside that bends across the field (the red route) while the other releases up the seam and bends into a corner route toward the sideline. The single receiver to the open side runs a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline, and the back who fakes the toss leaks out to the flat as a checkdown after selling run action. The primary read starts with the corner/flag route breaking to the boundary, works to the deep in crossing underneath it, and finishes with the flat leak as the outlet if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong safety and linebackers at the snap: if they crash hard on the toss fake, the deep in and corner routes will have wide throwing lanes behind them. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with aggressive run support are the most exploitable since the play-action freezes underneath defenders and opens the deep in route. Zone defenses that keep both safeties deep (Cover 2 or Cover 4) can squeeze the corner route and force the QB into the underneath crosser or the flat checkdown. Man coverage on the bunch releases can create natural rub/pick opportunities, so watch for a user defender jumping the deep in route early since that is the primary route. Fast-flowing linebackers who ignore the fake and immediately drop into passing lanes will disrupt the crossing route and force a quicker checkdown to the flat.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety to confirm the play-action toss fake is being respected before committing to this call.
Look for single high shells or run-heavy fronts that bite on the toss action, since the fake is more effective against defenses stacking the box.
If the corner rolls hard to the flat side threatening the deep in route, hot route the underneath crosser into a sit route to beat zone drops with less traffic.
Pair this with Crack Toss or Pin Pull Toss earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and bites on the fake, setting up bigger explosive plays with Fk Toss Slide.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to load the box expecting run, giving the play-action fake maximum impact.
