Corner Strike is a bunch based passing concept out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset that isolates a two man route combo on the backside while attacking the boundary corner route on the strong side. The bunch releases into a deep cross, a corner-post breaking back inside, and a flat route underneath, while the isolated receiver on the line runs a hard corner route up the sideline against off coverage. This is primarily a man beater, using natural picks created by the bunch alignment to spring the crosser while the corner route wins one on one on the outside. The primary read progression starts with the outside corner route against man coverage, then works into the bunch to the deep cross and flat as checkdown options.

Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback over the isolated receiver pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no help over the top this play wins immediately on the corner route. Check safety rotation after the snap, a single high safety rolling late to the corner side signals Cover 3 and you should expect the corner route to be squeezed, so progress into the crossing route. If the defense shows two deep safeties and the corner sits at the numbers, this indicates zone coverage underneath, work the flat route or crossing route since the corner route will be contested. Look for a user controlled linebacker or safety flashing down into a lurk position near the crossing route, this is the biggest threat to the middle read and often signals a Cover 4 or match zone concept designed to take away the picks from the bunch. If the offensive line shows a hot blitz look with extra defenders crashing the box, get the ball out fast on the flat route since protection may not hold up long enough for the corner route to develop.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the isolated receiver, tight man coverage on that receiver is your green light to go directly to the corner route. If you see a two high shell rotating late, hot route the flat route to a quick out or speed out to beat off coverage defenders sitting underneath. Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where the defense expects a run or a quick game concept, the corner route hits explosively against Cover 2 or Cover 3 if the corner jumps the flat. Pair this with Mtn Slot Post or Verts Dig from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both attack the middle of the field and force safeties to respect vertical shots after they sell out to stop the corner. Against aggressive user blitzers, use the flat route as your outlet since it clears out quickly and gives the quarterback a safety valve before the corner route fully develops.
