Dagger out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset sends the backside X on a deep vertical to clear out the top of the defense while the bunch releases a deep dig underneath it, a corner route breaking outside from the middle of the bunch, and a flat route from the innermost bunch receiver to hold the underneath defender. This is a classic man and zone beater concept that uses the vertical to occupy deep coverage while the dig settles into the void created behind it. Primary read progression starts with the vertical shot if the corner overplays the dig, then works to the deep dig as the true first read, and finally checks down to the corner or flat route if the middle of the field stays clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side signals Cover 3 and tells you the dig will have room to work behind the underneath defenders. Key the flat defender and underneath linebacker to the bunch side, since if they widen with the flat route immediately it opens a bigger throwing lane for the dig behind them. If the defense shows Cover 2 with two deep safeties splitting the field, the dig should split the seam between the corner's deep zone and the safety's zone, so watch for the corner sinking too far under the vertical route. User-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this concept, so if you see a defender spying the dig window pre-snap, be ready to check to the corner route or the flat outlet instead. Man coverage with a blitz on the backside can collapse this play fast since the dig takes time to break, so recognize overload blitz looks and get the ball out to the flat route as a built-in answer.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is showing two high or rotating to single high, since Dagger thrives against Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells where the dig can settle in the seam behind the underneath zone defenders.

Against man coverage, hot route the flat runner into a quick option or shallow drag if the linebacker shows blitz, since the dig and vertical will take time to develop and you need an outlet against pressure.

Use the outside vertical as a clear out read only when the corner bites hard on the dig, otherwise stay patient and let the dig sit down in the window between the underneath zone and the deep coverage.

Pair this play with Verts Dig or Mtn Slot Post from the same set so the defense has to respect the vertical stress on early downs before you come back to Dagger on second or third down when they start cheating toward the underneath routes.

Best called on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to sit in zone, since the dig read needs a beat to develop and will get rushed against aggressive man blitz packages.
