Duo out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset is a gap-scheme power run play that uses double team blocks at the point of attack to displace the defensive line before climbing to the second level. The diagram shows the offensive line covered up with double teams on the interior, an offset HB set to work downhill, and no route concepts drawn since this is a pure run play with the bunch receivers releasing to occupy defenders on the perimeter. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the double team, read the play side linebacker fit, and cut off the block of the frontside double team or bend backside if the initial gap is clogged.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense has stacked the box with an extra safety or linebacker, since Duo loses efficiency against eight man fronts. Watch the defensive tackle alignment inside the double team, a shaded nose or three technique can anchor and slow the initial push, forcing a cutback read. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker fit, if he stays square and reads the double team quickly he can fill the gap before the second level block is secured. User controlled defenders who shoot gaps early can blow up Duo before the double team is set, so this play is vulnerable to well timed nano blitzes up front. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with a robber often struggle to fit Duo cleanly because the extra hang defender is out of position to add a run fitter, making single high looks a good matchup for this concept.
Use Duo on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action later in the drive.
Check the box count before the snap and only run Duo into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the double teams need numbers advantage to work.
Motion is not required here but identifying if the defense is in a two high shell versus one high helps you decide whether to trust the double team or bounce it outside against overloaded fronts.
Pair Duo with Read Option and Inside Zone from this same set so the defense cannot key run action off formation tendency alone.
Against aggressive linebackers who crash downhill on run fits, hold the double team longer and let the ball carrier bend the run backside for a cutback lane.
