QB Crack Sweep is a designed QB run out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset that pulls the quarterback around the edge behind a crack block from the bunch receiver alignment. The play art shows the offset back running interference to the play side while the bunch WRs crack down on the second level, sealing the edge for the QB to sweep outside. There is no route progression to read here since this is a pure designed run: your primary read is the edge leverage of the defensive end and OLB, deciding whether to bounce outside or cut it up inside the crack block.

Defensive Reads

Watch for an unblocked EDGE defender who reads the crack block and squeezes down, this is the primary threat to blow up the sweep for a loss. Look at safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side signals the defense expects the run and will fill fast with the extra defender. Post-snap, user players controlling the play side linebacker or safety flying downhill fast are the biggest lurk threat since the crack scheme sacrifices numbers outside for size on the edge. Nano blitz packages that send an extra rusher off the edge before the crack block can develop will consistently blow this play up, so avoid calling it against known aggressive edge blitz tendencies. If the defense runs a scrape exchange with the OLB replacing the crashing DE, the sweep loses its lane, so have a check ready to bail into a pass concept.

Usage Tips

Use this play when the defense shows a light box or the DE and OLB are crashing hard inside, since the crack blocks eliminate outside pursuit.

Check the alignment of the play side OLB or SAM before the snap, if he is walked up tight to the line the crack sweep has a harder time getting outside leverage.

Pair this with Read Option and HB Mtn QB Sweep from this same set so the defense cannot key on the QB run tendency out of Bunch Str Offset.

Best called on early downs or short yardage (2nd and short, 3rd and 2 or less) where a hard edge commitment from the QB can pick up a chunk gain before the defense adjusts.

If the defensive front stacks the play side with extra defenders, kill the play or check into Duo or Inside Zone to attack the weak side instead.
