QB Crack Sweep is a designed QB run out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset that pulls the quarterback outside behind a crack block from the bunch receivers. The diagram shows the bunch trio at the top crashing down inside to crack the edge defenders while the QB takes the handoff-style path and follows the blocking wall to the sideline. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a numbers and gap-leverage run play, so the primary read is simply picking the crease the crack blocks create and getting vertical once the edge is turned.
Defensive Reads
Watch for an overloaded edge defender who can beat the crack block before it forms, that immediately kills the run. Identify if the defense is playing outside contain, a disciplined edge defender who stays home will force the QB to cut back into traffic. Look at the strong safety depth pre-snap, if he is sitting close to the box he can crash down and blow up the crack sweep before it develops. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flowing hard to the sideline, that lurk threat can undercut the sweep angle. This play struggles against aggressive run blitzes and gap-exchange fronts that keep an extra defender unblocked at the point of attack.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm the play side has a light box, this sweep needs the crack blocks to actually win at the point of attack. Use it on early downs or short yardage when defenses are keying on the pass out of bunch sets. Motion checks are limited since this is QB designed run, so rely on the box count and edge defender leverage instead of a hot route adjustment. Pair this with Crack Toss and Pin Pull Toss from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one perimeter run concept. Mix in Read Option and HB Mtn QB Sweep afterward to keep linebackers guessing between QB keeper reads and outside zone sweep action.
