HB Mtn Trail Dbl Post is a motion-based passing concept out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset that puts a double post stack on the boundary while a trail route works underneath from the bunch. Pre-snap HB motion pulls a defender across the formation and clears space for the outside receiver to break vertically into a deep post, with the inside receiver running a shallower trail post right behind him to stack the coverage. The lone in-line blocker and offensive line stay in to protect while the QB reads the double post stack first, working from the deep post down to the trail post underneath it as the primary progression, making this a true man and zone beater built to attack both Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the bunch, a single high safety struggles to cover both post routes in the stack. Watch for man coverage defenders trailing the HB motion, if they get picked or rerouted by the formation it signals a blown assignment you can exploit deep. Post-snap, key the deep safety's first two steps, if he flows toward the deep post you snap the ball to the trail post underneath immediately. This concept is shut down by disciplined Cover 4 quarters defenders who stay square and pass off the post routes between levels, so avoid this call against teams that consistently sink their corners. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the trail post, so scan the underneath zone before committing to the shorter throw.
Use the HB motion pre-snap to identify if the defense rotates a linebacker or safety across, this tells you whether you are getting man or zone coverage before the ball is even snapped.
If the safety bites on the motion or widens late, hit the deep post for an explosive gain over the top.
Against Cover 2, target the trail post sitting behind the deep post since the safety cannot cover both levels of the stack.
Pair this play with Mtn Slot Post or Mtn Deep Post earlier in a drive so defenders start jumping the post routes, then come back to HB Mtn Trail Dbl Post to hit the trailer underneath when they overcommit.
Best called on second or third and medium when you want an explosive shot play but still have the trail route as a safety valve if the deep shot is not there.
