Breakdown

Mtn Slot Post is a motion-based man beater out of the Shotgun Bunch Str Offset set that uses pre-snap movement to distort the bunch alignment and free up the slot receiver on a post route breaking across the middle. The bunch formation naturally creates rub potential against man coverage while the backside receiver works a route to hold the safety, opening up the post window versus single high looks. The primary read progression starts with the post from the motioned slot receiver, then works to the underneath crosser or flat option if the safety rotates over the top to take away the post.

Defensive Reads

Check cornerback alignment on the bunch side before the snap, tight or inside leverage corners struggling to navigate traffic signals man coverage that this play is designed to exploit. Watch the free safety depth and width, a single high safety sitting in the middle of the field is the green light for the post since he has to cover too much ground. Post snap, track any linebacker or nickel defender sinking into a deep middle zone drop, that is a lurk threat that can undercut the post if the quarterback does not manipulate him with pump or ball placement. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two safeties splitting the field are the primary defense that shuts this down, since the post runs directly into help over the top. Watch for blitz packages sending pressure off the edge opposite the bunch, since the quarterback needs time to let the post develop and a fast four man rush can force an early throw before the route clears the traffic.

Usage Tips

Trigger the motion pre-snap and watch how the defense reacts, if defenders trail the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and the post should win.

Attack this play on second and medium or third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man match concepts to take away underneath routes.

If the safety shows two high pre-snap, check the post read to a shallow hot route or bail to Verts Dig from the same set to attack the seams instead.

Pair this call with Mtn Deep Post or HB Mtn Trail Dbl Post earlier in a series so the defense has already seen post shots and starts jumping the route, then use Mtn Slot Post as the counter when they overplay it.

User the underneath defender in the middle of the field if you are on defense scouting, but on offense against a user, look to bait that user with eye discipline before releasing the post.
