Speed Option Wk is a QB run play out of the Bunch Str Offset set in Shotgun 11 personnel, designed to attack the edge with a pitch option. The diagram shows the QB and HB running the option path to the left together, with the QB reading the play-side defensive end to decide whether to keep or pitch to the trailing HB. The offensive line down blocks inside while the bunch receivers to the right run off their defenders, clearing the perimeter for the option game to develop.
Key the play-side defensive end first since his crash or contain decision dictates the keep or pitch read. Watch for a scrape exchange linebacker flowing outside to take away the pitch man, which forces the QB to cut it up into traffic. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 or 4-2-5 base front, since lighter fronts with fewer edge defenders are more vulnerable to this concept. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting outside the tackle box pre-snap, which signals the defense is keying the option and will jump the pitch. If the safety rotates down to the play side before the snap, expect extra run support and consider audibling to a play-action shot instead.
Check the play-side defensive end alignment before the snap since he determines your entire read on the option.
Use this on early downs or short yardage when the defense is in a base front without extra speed on the edge.
If the defensive end sits wide and crashes hard, pull the ball and cut upfield through the vacated B gap.
Pair this with Read Option or Mtn HB Base from the same set to keep the defense guessing on similar HB action.
Avoid calling this against defenses showing heavy edge pressure or scrape exchange linebackers, since those defenders erase the pitch lane.
