Speed Option Wk is a shotgun run play out of Bunch Str Offset that gives the QB a true speed option look to the weak side of the formation. The offensive line pulls in the direction of the option, sealing the edge while the QB reads the flow of the pitch key defender to decide between keeping it himself or pitching to the HB trailing behind him. This is a pure run play designed to attack overaggressive edge defenders and light boxes, with the primary read progression starting on the first unblocked defender outside the tackle box, deciding pull or pitch based on his angle.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker as the pitch key, if he crashes on the QB the pitch to the HB should be wide open. Check for user controlled defenders flying downhill off the edge, since a disciplined option defender who stays home on the QB will shut this down. Look at safety depth before the snap, if a safety is stacked in the box this run play becomes much tougher to execute. Beware of scrape exchange linebackers who sit and read the mesh point, this coaches assignment can blow up both the keep and pitch options simultaneously. Nano blitzes or heavy edge pressure packages neutralize the play since the QB needs time to make the option read outside the tackle.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage when you have identified a light box or a defense playing pass-first shells like 2 high safety looks. Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the option is live for a pitch to the HB. Use hot routes sparingly here since this is a designed run, but you can motion the bunch receivers to bait linebackers into leaning coverage before the snap. Pair this with Read Option and HB Mtn QB Sweep from the same set to keep defenders honest on perimeter run fits. Save this play for third and short or second and short situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts rather than sub packages.
