The HB releases from the backfield on a swing/flare route out to the boundary opposite the bunch, giving the QB a built in checkdown outlet. This is a man beater concept designed to create natural picks and rubs at the line so the trail defender gets hung up in traffic, and the primary read progression starts with the trail route working to the flat, then climbs to the vertical seam routes, with the HB swing as the final checkdown.
Defensive Reads

The trail route thrives against man because the bunch alignment creates natural rub traffic, so if you see press man on the slot defender call this with confidence
Use the HB swing route as your answer versus a hard blitz look, especially if the protection shows a lot of pressure indicators pre-snap
Sequence this with Verts Dig or Mtn Deep Post from the same set so defenders start jumping the trail route underneath, opening up the vertical shots downfield later in a series
On third and medium distances the trail route sitting in the flat behind the bunch traffic is a reliable conversion target, so prioritize that route first before progressing outside
