Flood out of Shotgun Bunch Str Offset sends three receivers into the same vertical third of the field to overload a single zone defender, which is the definition of a classic flood concept. The backside X runs a quick out to hold the far corner, while the bunch side stacks a corner route, a deep vertical from the slot, and a flat route underneath to create a high low low stretch on the flat defender and deep third corner. Blocking is a standard 5 man pass protection with no play action tag shown, and the primary read progression works low to high: flat first for the checkdown, then the corner route breaking outside, then the deep vertical as the home run shot if the corner bites on the underneath stuff.
Identify the deep safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which are vulnerable to this flood concept on the bunch side. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the flat route he opens a passing lane for the corner route sitting behind him. User the underneath flat or curl defender manually in zone coverage to jump the flat route and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer for the deeper options. Two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with a hard flat defender squeeze this concept since they can double the corner route and still have help over the top. Watch for a fire zone blitz disguise, if the corner or slot defender crashes down as a blitzer pre-snap the quarterback needs to get the ball out on the flat route immediately before protection breaks down.
Use this against Cover 3 shells since the flood concept is designed to stress the single deep third defender with three levels of routes he cannot cover alone.
Read the flat defender first, if he sits on the flat route the corner route behind him will be wide open for a chunk gain.
Hot route the backside X into a hitch or slant if you see man coverage across the board, since the out route loses value against tight press man.
Pair this play with Mtn PA Flood Y-Delay or Return PA Flood in the same set to keep the same flood picture but add a play action element that slows down linebacker flow.
Call this on second and medium or third and long when you need a defined progression that has a built in checkdown if the deep shots are covered.
