The read defender sits over the box, and the diagram shows the backside receiver stepping outside then working vertical toward the sideline off the out cut at the top of the screen, while the two receivers stacked to the left run short crossing and out breakers to occupy underneath defenders. The primary read progression starts with the alert key defender near the line: if he crashes down on the run action, pull and throw the out to the boundary receiver, if he sits or widens, hand the ball off on the zone run scheme.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender or slot corner responsible for the isolated receiver, if he crashes toward the mesh point the out route behind him is wide open. Identify the alert defender pre-snap, usually the flat or overhang defender aligned over the isolated receiver, since his reaction dictates run or pass. Use this play on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, since the RPO nature keeps defenses honest against both run fits and coverage rotation. If the defense shows two high safeties with light box numbers, lean run, if the box is stacked or the corner squats hard on the out, pull and throw immediately before the alert defender can recover. Pair this play with Read Option or Inside Zone from the same set to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit RPO Alert Out when they overcommit. Hot route the out receiver to a quick slant against aggressive man corners who jump the out route, turning this into a true man beater without changing personnel.
