RPO Alert Out is a run-pass option built off the Trey Y-Flex bunch look, showing an outside zone run action to the backfield with the QB reading an alert defender before deciding to throw or hand off. On the perimeter, the isolated X receiver runs a hard out route breaking to the sideline off the numbers, giving the QB an instant conflict read against overplayed run fronts. The primary progression is pre-snap alert key first, then if the run is off, the QB fires the out route to the boundary as the first pass option, using the RPO shell to punish light box counts or aggressive linebacker flow.
Watch the alert defender pre-snap, if he is stacked in the box with no conflict assignment the QB will likely pull and throw the out immediately. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high shell with the corner playing inside leverage invites the run while two high shells with off corners open up the out route. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders, if linebackers crash hard on zone action the out route behind them will be wide open in the flat to intermediate window. User a defender over the flat or boundary corner to jump the out route timing, since this is the built-in pass beater and taking it away often forces the offense back into the run fit. Blitzes from the edge or overhang can disrupt the RPO read window entirely, forcing a rushed decision, so aggressive nano blitz packages off the alert side are one of the best counters to this concept.
Identify the alert defender pre-snap, usually the force player or overhang linebacker, since his run-pass conflict determines whether you hand off or throw the out route.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium distance where defenses are more likely to load the box against outside zone.
If the cornerback is playing off or shows soft outside leverage, hot route the out into a quicker breaking route to speed up the RPO timing against zone drops.
Pair this call with Read Option or Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then hit Alert Out when they start cheating downhill.
Sequence RPO Alert Out with RPO Zone Alert Screen so the defense cannot sit on one specific alert key without giving up either the run, the out, or the screen.
