RPO Peek Slant lines up out of Shotgun Normal Y Off with 11 personnel and reads like a true run pass option built off inside zone action. The diagram shows the backside slot receiver running a quick slant while the outside receiver on that side works vertical then breaks back across the field on a deep dig, giving the quarterback a peek read at the slant before the run fake even develops. The offensive line and TE show zone run blocking to the play side, meaning the QB is reading the alley defender or a peeking linebacker to decide between handing off the run or pulling and firing the slant. This is primarily a zone beater because the slant window opens against light box defenders and off man leverage, and the primary read progression is peek slant first, then run key second if the slant window is closed.
Watch the flow of the play side linebacker after the snap, if he steps up hard to fill the run lane the slant window is naturally open behind him. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap since these tend to leave the slant lane vulnerable to a peeking backer. If the defense shows two deep safeties with press corners, expect the slant to be contested early and lean toward the run key instead. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the backfield, that lurk threat is the biggest counter to the peek slant. Look for blitzing linebackers that come from depth rather than the line, since a delayed blitz can beat the quarterback to his decision before the slant fully develops.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the slot corner is playing off coverage since that creates the biggest window for the peek slant read.
Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short so the run action stays credible and the defense has to respect both options.
If the defense shows a hard blitz look pre-snap, hot route the slant receiver to a quicker breaking route or bail into the run side of the RPO instead of forcing the throw.
Pair this call with RPO Zone Peek and Read Option in your play sequencing so the defense cannot key on the same backfield action every snap.
Against man coverage, key the deep dig route on the backside since it can become the true answer if the slant gets jumped by an underneath defender.
