Play diagram for Mtn HB Swing from Shotgun Normal Y Off in Madden 27

Not in any team playbook.

Breakdown

Mtn HB Swing comes out of Shotgun Normal Y Off with 11 personnel, using pre-snap motion to bring a receiver in tight before the snap. Post-snap, the outside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field while the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing route to the flat, giving the QB a clear high-low read on that side. This is a quick-hitting man beater designed to attack blitzes and man coverage by getting the HB into space against a linebacker, with the drag underneath serving as a secondary check-down option.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker assigned to the HB out of the backfield before the snap, if he is walked up tight or shows blitz intent, the swing route becomes an even bigger mismatch in space. Man coverage on the HB is the biggest green light for this play, since the swing route creates instant separation against most linebackers in man. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting outside can shut this down, so key on the cornerback or outside linebacker depth at the snap to see if they are sinking into the flat. User-controlled defenders lurking underneath in a Tampa 2 or Cover 3 shell can jump the swing route, so be ready to check to the drag route if you see a defender spying that flat area. Heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers usually leave the HB uncovered in the flat, making this play a built-in answer to five and six man pressure looks.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back, which tells you whether you are facing man or zone coverage before the snap.

This play is money against blitz-heavy defenses since the HB swing gets outlet protection into space immediately, making it a great answer on third and short or when you suspect a nano blitz.

If the defense shows zone with a linebacker sitting underneath, hot route the drag route deeper or into a settle route to sit in the void between zone defenders.

Pair this play with Mtn HB Off Tackle or HB Counter in the same set to keep defenses honest, since the swing action out of the backfield mirrors run action and forces linebackers to hesitate.

Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the sticks or as a checkdown safety valve when your deeper progressions in Four Verticals or Mtn PA Verticals are covered.
