Mtn HB Swing is a motion based screen and swing pass concept out of Shotgun Normal Y Off, 11 personnel. Pre snap motion brings a receiver across to the backfield area, and at the snap the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing route to the flat while the far side X runs an outside release route to occupy the corner. The offensive line sets up a quick edge release to spring the HB into space, making this a zone beater designed to attack soft flat zones and outrun linebackers to the sideline. The primary read is the HB swing route out of the backfield, with the QB looking to get the ball out quickly before second level defenders can flow to the edge.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a flat defender sitting at the line of scrimmage pre snap, this is the primary threat that can jump the HB swing route. Identify if the defense runs the motion with a man defender, if a linebacker or safety follows the motion man across the formation expect man coverage and look to attack with a hot routed slant or out instead. Key the edge defender's first step at the snap, if he crashes hard upfield on a contain rush the swing lane opens immediately for an easy pitch and catch. Use this play on second and short or third and short when defenses are likely to sit in zone shells expecting a run out of the motion look.

Check the pre snap alignment of the flat defender and outside linebacker, if they are sitting inside or blitzing off the edge this swing wins easily.

Hot route the backside X into a quick out or slant if the defense shows man coverage across the board so you have an answer versus press man.

Pair this play with Mtn PA Verticals or Mtn Curls from the same formation to keep defenses honest, since the identical motion and personnel disguise the eventual concept.

Throw with anticipation as soon as the HB clears the tackle box, this is a timing throw and holding the ball too long lets pursuit defenders close the passing window.
