Mtn Spot Wheel comes out of Shotgun Normal Y Off with a pre-snap motion man crossing the backfield (blue route) to sell run action before the play develops into a spot concept on the left with a wheel route breaking out of the flat. The two receivers to the left run a mini spot combo, with the inside man hitting a quick pivot/hitch (red route) underneath while the outside man wheels vertically up the sideline off the motion, and both the TE and backside X run deep vertical routes to hold the safeties and clear the wheel lane. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack zone rotation, with the primary read starting at the wheel route against a matched up linebacker or safety before working down to the underneath pivot and flat as checkdowns.
Watch the motion man pre-snap: if a defender mirrors him across the formation, you are in man coverage and the wheel route has a strong chance to win deep against a slower defender. Key the flat or curl/flat zone defender at the snap, since Cover 3 defenses that widen too aggressively to the flat will get run past by the wheel route up the sideline. If the deep third or deep half safety on the wheel side stays home and shades outside, the wheel gets taken away and you should check down to the pivot route in the shorter zone. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone, since they can undercut the pivot route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against heavy blitz packages, identify the underneath pivot as the quick outlet, since it releases fast enough to beat most nano blitzes before pressure arrives.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense rotates or checks into man coverage, since a linebacker following the motion man across the formation confirms man and tells you to speed up the wheel read.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, trust the wheel route first because the flat defender or curl/flat player will not have the speed to stay on top of it once it clears the LOS.
If the defense shows two high safeties and the corner sits on the wheel, work back down to the underneath pivot route for a quick, safe completion in man or soft zone.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Swing or Curl Flats earlier in a drive so defenders start jumping the flat routes, then hit them with the wheel for an explosive play once they overplay the short stuff.
Use this on second or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, since the deep verticals on the right side hold safety help away from the wheel side.
