Double Slants comes out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk with 11 personnel and puts three receivers into quick underneath routes while the backside outside receiver runs a deep in route across the field. The two inside receivers on the strong side both run slants that cross the middle in a classic pick concept, while the outside receiver on that side runs a deep crossing route from the opposite boundary to stretch the defense horizontally, and the running back releases into a short check down route out of the backfield. This is a man beater built to attack the natural picks created by the slant combo, with the primary read starting on the inside slant, moving to the crossing route if a linebacker jumps the first read, and checking down to the running back as the outlet against a hard blitz.
Man coverage with tight corner alignment is where this play thrives because the slant combo naturally picks off man defenders trying to trail their receivers through the middle. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers who key the backfield can be baited into the flat, leaving the crossing route wide open behind them. Zone coverage with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the underneath middle zone is the biggest counter, as that defender can jump both slant routes and blow up the primary read. Off man corners with a deep half safety shell signal Cover 2, which means the slants may get contested at the catch point, so be ready to progress quickly to the crossing route or the check down. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge but leave a linebacker spying the running back can take away the outlet, forcing a quicker decision on the slant or crosser before the pocket collapses.
Fire this play on quick passing downs like 2nd or 3rd and short when you need a fast, high percentage completion against man coverage. Pre-snap, look for man alignment with corners lined up tight on the receivers since the slant combo creates natural rubs that man defenders struggle to fight through. If you see two high safeties with soft corners, expect the underneath defenders to sit and squat, so be ready to hit the deep crossing route instead of forcing the slant. Use the check down to the running back as a built in answer to disguised blitzes, especially when the defense shows pressure off the edge. Pair this play with Curl Combo or WR Under in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both quick game and intermediate routes, keeping linebackers honest and opening passing lanes over the middle.
