Mtn Inside Zone is a pure run play out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk with 11 personnel, and the diagram shows a pre-snap motion tag bringing a receiver across the formation before the snap to shift defensive alignment. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, with double teams at the point of attack designed to climb to the second level and wash down defensive linemen. The primary read progression for the HB is to press the play side gap, read the double team block first, and bounce to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the motion man closely, since a linebacker or safety chasing across the formation signals man coverage and often creates a vacated run lane for the cutback. Count the box defenders before the snap, and if there are seven or more in the box this play will struggle unless the defense is out of position after motion. Key the play side defensive tackle and any user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill, since a disciplined gap read defender who stays home on the backside can blow up the cutback lane. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the interior gaps before the zone blocks can set, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz looks. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post motion, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the run and opens up play-action shots off this same look later in the drive.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and opens up run lanes if that defender is a linebacker pulled out of the box. Run this play on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots. Pair Mtn Inside Zone with RPO Zone Read Bubble and RPO Alert Bubble from this same set so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the perimeter bubble screen off identical formation and motion looks. Mix in PA Slide or Mtn PA Flood HB Leak after establishing this run a few times to punish linebackers who start crashing down hard on the zone action.
