Breakdown

Exit Slot Cross is a pure dropback passing concept out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion sends the slot receiver in orbit motion across the formation before the snap, and post-snap the outside receiver on that side runs an exit route (the yellow route bending back away from traffic) while the motion man clears underneath. On the strongside, the TE runs a deep crossing route (red) that stems upfield before breaking across the middle, and the far outside receiver runs a vertical release that bends up the sideline (blue) to hold safety attention. This is a man beater built to create natural separation with the crosser against man leverage, with the deep vertical acting as a clear out and the exit route as a late checkdown against zone drops. Primary read progression starts with the TE crosser working across the field, then works back to the exit route underneath if the middle is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety over the top signals man coverage underneath and tells you the crosser is your primary answer since he can work away from trailing defenders. Track the linebacker assigned to the motion man, if he sprints to match the orbit motion in man coverage the middle of the field opens up for the TE crosser to sit in the void behind him. Key any user controlled defender flowing to the deep vertical route, if that user leaves the middle of the field to chase the sideline throw the crosser will break wide open behind him. Recognize Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops by watching the underneath linebackers, if they sink into deep thirds or quarters instead of matching motion the exit route becomes the easier completion against the sagging zone. Beware disguised Cover 2 looks with a jumping corner, if the corner on the vertical route side plays press and jumps the route stem it can bait a risky throw into a robber defender sitting underneath the crosser.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the crosser will have a clean angle to work against trailing defenders.

Attack this play on second and medium or third and medium when you need a chain-moving completion over the middle but still have an explosive shot option if the safety bites on the crosser.

Hot route the far outside receiver into a deep comeback if you see a two high shell rotating late, this keeps the vertical threat honest without needing him to win straight up the sideline against a corner playing off.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Exit Double Slants earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping quick game routes, then come back to Exit Slot Cross to hit the crosser behind linebackers who are sitting on shallow throws.

If the defense shows heavy pressure looks, check into Inside Cross or Exit WR Screen from the same set since the deep drop on this play takes time to develop and is vulnerable to a well timed blitz.
