Exit Slot Cross is a Shotgun 11 personnel passing concept featuring a receiver motion to a slot alignment before the snap, with three vertical stem routes stacking the defense at different depths on the play side and a deep crosser working from the backside all the way across the field. The far outside receiver runs a corner-breaking go route to stretch the deep third, the middle route bends outward into the intermediate zone, and the slot man exits underneath toward the sideline as a shallow flat outlet while the crosser occupies the middle of the field. This is primarily a man beater built on the crosser creating natural separation against trailing defenders, with the deep and intermediate routes clearing space for it, and the primary read progresses from the deep corner route to the crosser working across the field to the shallow exit route underneath.
Defensive Reads
Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap since a linebacker sinking with the crosser instead of jumping underneath routes signals a zone shell that favors the deep corner route instead. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since that defender can undercut the crosser if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Man coverage with a defender chasing the motion across the formation is the biggest tell that the crosser will win, since trailing defenders in man rarely have the leverage to cut off the route once it crosses the field. Cover 3 with a hard-charging strong safety blitz can shut this down quickly since the crosser loses its window if the middle linebacker or safety sits in the throwing lane before the route develops. Press man coverage on the outside receivers running the deep and intermediate routes can disrupt timing at the top of the route stem, so check for jammed releases before committing to the first read.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the crosser will have a wide-open throwing window.
Attack this on second and medium to second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to play off man or a single-high shell that leaves the crosser running through vacated intermediate zones.
If the defense shows two-high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the deep corner route on the outside since it can win against a Cover 2 hole in the deep quarters.
Hot route the shallow exit man into a quick option route if you see aggressive underneath zone drops jumping the crosser, giving yourself a checkdown against blitz looks.
Pair this play with Double Slants or WR Under in your play-calling sequence since both attack the same underneath zones but force linebackers to respect quicker throws before you hit them with the deeper developing crosser.
