Breakdown

Exit WR Screen is a quick-hitting screen play out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion sends the receiver in orbit motion behind the backfield toward the opposite side, setting up as the screen target while the outside receiver runs an exit route vertically upfield to clear space and occupy the corner. The offensive line and near receiver work to get bodies out in front for the screen, blocking downfield to spring the ball carrier once he catches it in the flat. This is a man beater designed to exploit aggressive man coverage and fast pursuit defenders flowing hard upfield, with the primary read being the screen receiver first and the exit route as a deep, low-percentage checkdown if the screen is jumped.

Defensive Reads

Watch the motion receiver at the snap, if a defender mirrors him across the formation that is a strong man coverage indicator and the screen should hit quickly. Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers, if they crash hard upfield on the snap without containing the flat, this play will exploit that aggression. Beware of a user-controlled defender spying the screen or sitting in the flat, since a smart lurking defender can jump the throw for a big loss or turnover. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high shell with corners playing tight man coverage is the ideal alignment for this screen to succeed. Against zone blitz packages or Cover 3 sink concepts, defenders dropping into short zones can sit on the screen and blow up the timing, so avoid this call versus disciplined zone teams.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and the screen has a green light.

Snap the ball quickly once you see the motion defender flow with the receiver, this prevents defenders from sitting and squatting on the screen.

Best used on early downs or after establishing inside run plays from this set like Inside Zone or HB Draw, since it punishes linebackers and defensive ends who crash hard upfield.

Pair this call with Double Slants or X Dagger in the same set to keep defenses honest, alternating between quick screens and drop back passing concepts to freeze aggressive defenders.

Avoid calling this against zone-heavy shells with defenders sitting underneath, since flat zone defenders can read the screen and blow it up before blockers get set.

In short yardage or third and short situations, this play is a low-risk call that punishes overpursuit and blitz-heavy defensive play calling.
