Breakdown

PA Slot Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk that sends a deep crosser from the left slot all the way across the field into the right flat area, while the backside receiver runs a corner route up the sideline. The far right receiver releases vertically up the numbers on a go route, and the underneath outlet runs a shallow drag from the left side of the formation across the field behind the crosser, giving the quarterback a layered read from deep to short. The play-action element holds linebackers and safeties for a beat, making this an effective man beater against man coverage since the crosser creates natural separation working across traffic, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, moves to the crossing route working underneath it, and checks down to the shallow drag if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner depth and safety rotation, since press man corners signal a good matchup for the corner route and crosser. Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap to see if they bite on the run fake, which opens a clean throwing lane for the crosser working across the field. Key on any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag or crosser lane, since a lurking linebacker or safety can jump the underdneath throw and create a turnover opportunity. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with aggressive run support is where this play thrives because the play-action freezes the second level, but Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops can clog the crosser's path and force a checkdown. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue if the play-action fake does not sell, so watch for overload pressure on the play side and get the ball out on time to the crosser or drag.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or first and ten when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake, since the play-action hold is critical to opening up the crosser. Pre-snap, look for single high safety looks or man coverage indicators like tight corner alignment on the outside receivers, since the corner route and crosser both work well against man leverage. If the defense shows two high safeties or a soft zone shell, hot route the underneath drag into a quicker option or consider audibling to Curl Combo or WR Under from the same set for a faster developing zone beater. Combine this play with Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in a drive to sell the run fake and make the play-action rollout more believable to the defense. Watch for user linebackers dropping into the crosser lane and be ready to check down to the shallow drag if you see a defender sitting in that window post-snap.
