Fork H-Choice out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk lines up with a fork concept to the boundary where two receivers cross paths, one running a deep corner/flag route and the other breaking off into an out route, creating natural traffic for man coverage. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking away from the fork side, while the slot defender releases up the seam on a vertical stem. The H-back or FB pops out to the flat on a choice route, reading the leverage of the nearest defender, and the running back checks releases into a shallow flare underneath. This is a man beater built on natural rub concepts, with the primary read starting on the H-back choice route against man leverage before working to the fork side comeback or seam depending on the coverage shell shown.
Watch the slot cornerback's press alignment pre-snap, tight press man usually means the fork rub will spring someone open so be ready to pass off the crosser instead of trailing through traffic. Key the flat defender's depth after the snap, if he sits too deep the H-back choice will settle in front of him for an easy completion, so user him down into the flat if possible. If you see a single high safety rotate late, that signals man coverage underneath, which means the fork concept's natural pick will likely spring one receiver open against tight trailing defenders. Watch for a linebacker or slot defender blitzing off the edge, since the H-back choice route release can be disrupted if you use him as a spy or delayed blitzer instead of committing to coverage. Sit a zone linebacker or safety in the deep comeback throwing window on the backside, since that route settles into a soft spot that two-deep shells leave open if underneath defenders drop too shallow.
Diagnose man versus zone pre-snap by checking if the slot defender walks with the seam runner off the line, that tells you man coverage and confirms the fork concept will create a natural pick.
Use the H-back choice route as your first read against blitz-heavy man looks since the FB can settle inside or bend outside based on the nearest linebacker's leverage, giving you a built-in answer versus nano blitzes.
Against zone shells with two deep safeties, work the comeback route on the backside since it settles into the void behind underneath zone defenders and in front of the deep half safety.
This play pairs well with Double Slants and Curl Combo from the same set since both attack underneath zone quickly, letting you set up defenders to jump quick game before hitting the deeper fork routes for a big play.
Best called on second or third and medium since the H-back choice route gives you a quick answer to move the chains, but the fork side comeback can also hit for a chunk gain if the corner sits too deep.
