Breakdown

Orbit Y Lead Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun 11 personnel with orbit motion across the backfield before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme sliding to the play side, with the H-back or TE working through as a lead blocker on the edge, while the WR to the outside runs a route to hold the corner. The primary read is the QB reading the play side defensive end: if he crashes down on the RB, the QB pulls it and follows the lead blocker outside, and if the end sits or widens, the QB hands off for the zone run inside.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end pre-snap and at the snap, his crash or contain decision dictates whether the QB keeps or hands off. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB, since that eliminates the keep option and forces the RB into a stacked box. Check safety depth before the snap, a safety cheating into the box signals run support and makes the edge less favorable for the pull. If the defense sends extra edge pressure or a nano blitz off the same side as the read, the QB needs to get rid of the ball or check down quickly since the mesh point can be disrupted. Zone coverage shells with linebackers reading run fits hard will clog the inside zone lane, so watch linebacker flow before deciding whether the RB path is viable.

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion to get a pre-snap look at the defense, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely facing man coverage and can key the edge defender with more confidence.

Call this on run-friendly downs like 2nd and short or 1st and 10 where defenses may be in base fronts rather than sub packages built to stop the QB run.

If the defense shows a heavy box with the safety creeping down, pull the ball more often since the numbers favor the edge with the lead blocker.

Pair this with Inside Zone or Fk Leak Outside Zone from the same set to keep the defense honest on zone reads, then mix in RPO Zone Read Bubble so linebackers cannot sit on the run fit.

Against aggressive defensive ends who crash hard every snap, key on that tendency early and be ready to pull the ball for an explosive gain to the edge.
