Escort Curl Combo

Breakdown

Escort Curl Combo is a shotgun 11 personnel pass concept built around a curl and flat combination to one side that stresses zone defenders horizontally while the backside works as a hitch or dig option for the quarterback to reset if the primary combo is covered. The line uses a standard pass protection scheme with the HB releasing on an escort route to chip and check the edge before working outward as a checkdown, giving the quarterback a built in answer against blitzes. This is primarily a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 2 sink zones, with the primary read starting on the curl route settling into the hole, then progressing to the flat if the corner sinks under the curl, and finally to the backside breaking route or the escort checkdown if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check corner depth on the curl side, a soft corner playing seven to nine yards off signals zone drop and confirms the curl sit read. Identify the flat defender, if the cornerback or nickel jumps the flat route immediately after the snap that is a Cover 3 or match zone tell, work back to the curl or backside route. Watch the Mike linebacker's depth and hips at the snap, a shallow drop or spy alignment suggests a lurk threat sitting in the curl window, which should push your eyes to the flat or escort checkdown. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB out of the backfield is the biggest red flag, expect the escort route to get picked up quickly and lean on the curl or backside dig instead. Disguised zone blitzes that bring a safety off the edge can collapse the pocket before the curl route sits down, so track late safety rotation and be ready to hit the checkdown early if you see the extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Look at the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this curl and flat combo will have a soft window underneath against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

Use the escort route from the HB as your blitz beater, if you see the Mike or a slot corner walked up showing pressure, keep the checkdown in your progression and get the ball out fast.

This play hits best on second and medium to long or third and short to medium where defenses sit in zone to protect against explosive plays downfield.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you diagnose Cover 3 pre-snap, this gives you a second zone beater window away from the curl flat combo.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Inside Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick game, then come back to Escort Curl Combo to punish linebackers who are cheating up on shallow crossers.
