Breakdown

Mtn PA Flood HB Leak is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the TE runs a flag route from the slot, stacking a two level flood on one side while the backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field. The HB leaks out of the backfield to the flat after selling the fake, giving you a built in checkdown against overpursuing linebackers, and this is a clear Cover 3 beater designed to stress the flat and deep third defender with three levels of the same side. Primary read progression starts with the corner route on top, works down to the TE flag underneath it, and finishes with the HB leak in the flat if the flood side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks since this concept is a direct answer to Cover 3 and will overload the flood side defender. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone dropper post-snap, if he sinks with the flag route the corner route behind him is open for a big play. Key the backside safety rotation, if he cheats to the flood side the backside dig is your answer for an explosive gain. Man coverage with a single deep safety struggles versus this concept because the flood stacks three routes on top of each other on the same side. Watch for user linebackers spying the HB leak, if the defense sits on the checkdown you must trust the corner and flag routes up top.

Usage Tips

Look for Cover 3 or single high shells pre-snap since this play is built to stress the deep third defender and the flat defender on the flood side simultaneously.

If the corner is jumping the flag route or sitting on the flood side, work the backside dig for a chunk play across the middle.

Use the HB leak as your answer versus zone blitzes or when the defense rolls extra help to the flood side, since the leak develops late and finds soft grass underneath.

Run this on early downs after establishing inside zone or PA Slide from this set so the play fake holds linebackers and opens throwing lanes on the flood side.

Pair this play in your call sheet with Fk Leak Outside Zone or Counter Bash to keep defenses honest on the run fake before hitting them with this flood shot.
