Four Verticals out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk sends all four eligible receivers vertically to stretch the field horizontally and vertically at once. Both outside WRs release straight upfield from the numbers, the Y (TE) runs a vertical seam from the slot, and the inside slot WR pushes a shallow vertical/skinny post that clears underneath traffic. The HB stays in to help protect, giving the QB a clean pocket to read the safeties and throw off the middle of the field defender's leverage, making this a true man and zone beater rather than a run, screen, or RPO concept. Primary progression starts with the seam route from the TE, works to the skinny post/inside vertical, then bends outside to the two boundary verticals if the middle safety widens.
Defensive Reads
Man press coverage without a deep safety help crashing over the top gets exposed instantly by the seam route, so trail technique defenders are a green light to throw early. Two deep safeties splitting the field into quarters signals Cover 4, meaning the outside verticals are more contested and the skinny post is your friend against the vacated middle void. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they sink hard into deep zone drops instead of matching the seam route vertically, that is a Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shell letting the seam sit in a soft spot between levels. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep lurk over the slot seam are trying to bait a checkdown before jumping the throw, so hold the ball an extra beat and look to the boundary verticals instead. A hard blitz with only one deep safety back is the biggest tell to take the top off immediately since there is no help over the seam or post routes before the ball gets there.
Usage Tips
Check the middle of the field pre-snap. If you see one deep safety (Cover 1 or Cover 3), immediately key the seam and skinny post because the MOFC defender cannot cover both verticals in the middle third. If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), widen your eyes to the outside verticals since the safeties will have to choose which one to help on, opening a one on one shot against the corner. Use motion or a hot route to convert the inside slot route into a deep cross if you diagnose zone coverage post-snap and want to hold the underneath defenders. This play hits best on second and long or third and long when defenses drop into predictable zone shells expecting a checkdown.
