Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth since a single high safety usually means an extra run defender is disguised near the line. Watch for linebacker cheat steps toward the play side gap, which signals a run blitz or a nano blitz timed to hit before the zone flow develops. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and end for penetration versus controlled zone steps, since disciplined gap defense forces the back to bounce outside. This play struggles against stacked fronts with a spy or an extra linebacker sitting in the A gap, so avoid calling it into heavy goal line or 4-3 Odd looks. It beats light boxes and Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells where the second level linebackers bite on play-action or RPO tendencies from earlier snaps in the drive.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping this play.
If the defense shows six or more in the box, consider hot routing the Y off the TE to a quick out or checking to an RPO from this same set instead.
Pair this play with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Bubble from the same formation so the defense cannot sit on run reads without conceding easy throws.
On early downs, run this to set up Fk Leak Outside Zone or Counter Bash later in the series once linebackers start crashing down on the inside track.
Manually control the play side guard or center at the snap to help seal the first wave of penetration and keep the cutback lane alive for the HB.
