The backside X runs a deep go to clear the corner and safety while the outside receiver on that side breaks off a shallow out underneath, and the field side runs a deep dig sitting down over the middle with the outlet receiver working a wheel style go up the sideline. The HB runs a shallow drag under everything from the backfield, giving you a checkdown against underneath zone or a pick option versus man. The primary read starts with the dig on the vertical stem, works down to the drag as the shallow crosser clears the box, and ends with the HB as the safety valve against any pressure look.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth and alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the field side dig is a green light to take that shot down the middle. Watch for a linebacker sitting in a hook zone or spy responsibility, that defender is the primary lurk threat against both the drag and the dig if he reads quarterback eyes. Against zone coverage look for the corners sinking into deep thirds, that opens a window for the shallow out and the drag underneath before the zone fully rotates. Man coverage with no help over the top is where this play hurts defenses most, especially if the linebacker covering the HB out of the backfield gets picked off by the crossing routes. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or from depth force a fast decision, so recognize disguised pressure and get the ball out on the drag or checkdown before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high, because the deep dig only opens up against single high shells where the safety has to respect the go route on the backside.

If you see man coverage, key the HB drag immediately since it is your best rub route against man defenders trying to trail across the field.

Use this on second and medium to second and long where the defense expects a quicker underneath throw, then hit the deep dig for an explosive gain when linebackers bite on the drag.

Hot route the outside go into a slant or hitch if you are getting a hard press corner look, this turns the play into a quick game beater versus press man.

Pair this with Double Slants or Inside Cross in the same set to keep defenders guessing on shallow crossers, then call WR Under later in the drive once they start jumping the quick game.
