Hook Z Post is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk that stresses the middle of the field and the deep boundary at the same time. The backside receiver runs a deep post while the two receivers on that side run a spot combo (flat, hitch, and a crossing dig underneath), and the lone receiver to the strongside runs a vertical seam that breaks into a corner route. There is no run action tagged here, this is a straight dropback pass play designed to beat both man and zone coverage by putting a deep shot on one side and a natural hook/curl window on the other. The primary read starts with the post shot off the strong safety, then works down to the underneath crossing routes if the post is capped.

Defensive Reads

Key the strong safety pre-snap, if he rotates late to the post side after the snap that is a Cover 1 or Cover 3 rotation and you should expect the post window to shrink quickly. Watch the corner over the post route, if he opens his hips early and runs with the receiver before the ball is snapped that is a sign of aggressive man coverage that can be beaten with a hard stem and speed. Track the underneath linebackers on the crossing routes, if they sink into hook zones instead of chasing across the field, this is a zone shell and the flat route becomes the easy checkdown. Look for a lurking defender sitting in the throwing lane of the post route, that is a classic Cover 3 or Tampa 2 rat defender designed to jump the middle read, so be ready to check down instead of forcing the post. If the defense shows a two high shell pre-snap but rotates one safety down into the box, that is often a disguised blitz, get the ball out quickly to the flat or hitch before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap glance at the strong safety alignment, if he is shaded toward the post side or sitting deep middle in a single high shell, the post window closes fast and you should work the underneath crossers instead.

Against single high safety looks (Cover 1 or Cover 3), trust the post to split the safety and the corner, this is the play's best matchup since one deep defender cannot cover both routes.

Against two high shells, check the flat and hitch combo since the underneath defenders will be occupied by the crossing traffic, giving you an easy completion before the post window opens.

Use hot routes to convert the corner route into a quick out or speed out if you see a corner sitting on top expecting the vertical push, this keeps the defense honest without abandoning the concept.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or X Dagger in your call sheet so the defense has to respect the deep post every snap, then come back to quicker concepts like Double Slants or WR Under to keep the safety from cheating.
