X Dagger out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Wk lines up with a classic dagger concept on the left side: the outside receiver runs a deep clear out route to occupy the corner and safety, while the inner receiver pushes vertical up the seam before sitting down into a dig route that crosses underneath the clear out. Underneath, the third receiver to that side runs a shallow drag across the field for a checkdown option against soft zone or blitz. On the backside, the lone receiver runs a corner route to hold that side's safety and prevent him from rotating over to help on the dig. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack the seam to zone hole with the dig as the primary read, working from the deep clear out down to the drag if the middle of the field is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, this signals Cover 2 and tells you the dig should have a clean throwing lane between the corner and safety if the clear out does its job. If you see a single high safety rotate to the middle of the field post-snap, expect Cover 3, the dig still works but you need to throw with anticipation before the flat defender can sink under it. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the seam are the biggest threat to this concept, if you see a user spying the dig lane check down to the drag route immediately. Man coverage with no safety help over the top invites a big play on the corner route to the backside, since the safety is occupied by the other side's clear out route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be countered by getting the ball out quickly on the drag, since Dagger's protection is built for a standard five man rush and can break down against six or more rushers.

Usage Tips

Read the deep safeties before the snap to confirm two high or single high, since Dagger is designed to expose the vacated hole between the corner and safety in both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells.

Key the seam runner as your first read, if the linebacker or hook defender widens with the clear out route the window for the dig opens up immediately behind him.

Use the drag route as your answer versus zone blitz or heavy pressure looks, it is the quickest developing route and gives you a built in outlet if the dig is not open in time.

Pair this call with Curl Combo or WR Under from the same set so the defense sees similar formation and route stems, then hit them with Dagger once they start jumping underneath routes.

Best used on second and medium to third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit back in zone coverage and give you the intermediate window this concept is designed to exploit.
