Escort QB Blast is a designated QB run out of Shotgun that uses the quarterback as the primary ball carrier with fullback-style lead blocking from the escort personnel up front. The offensive line pulls to create a running lane while the H-back or TE aligns to seal the edge, giving this play a downhill blast concept rather than a scramble design. This is strictly a run play, not a pass or RPO, and the primary read is simple: get vertical fast, following your lead blocker through the initial crease before checking the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Watch for stacked boxes with eight or more defenders, since this play struggles against heavy run commitment fronts. Identify if the defense is running a QB spy or contain scheme, which neutralizes the designed QB run threat by keeping a defender in the alley at all times. Look for linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and reading the mesh point can beat this play to the point of attack before the lead block develops. Man coverage shells with off-ball linebackers cheating outside for run support create natural cutback lanes for the QB. Check for blitzing safeties or nickel defenders crashing downhill pre-snap, since this indicates the defense has diagnosed the QB run tendency and will collapse the escort block immediately.
Call this on short yardage or goal line situations where defenses expect a stretch handoff or play-action pass, since the QB run look catches light boxes off guard.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or fewer in the box, this play hits hard because your lead blocker only needs to handle one extra defender.
Use your QB's speed and trucking or spin move ratings to maximize yards after contact, especially against slower linebacker builds.
Pair this with Escort Speed Option and Power Read in the same play calling sequence so the defense has to respect multiple QB run threats out of the same personnel and formation, forcing spy assignments or extra run fits.
Avoid calling this against aggressive edge blitz teams unless you have a mobile QB who can cut it back, since the design commits the QB to the box immediately.
Sprinkle this in after establishing Inside Zone or Mid Zone to keep linebackers reading run fits honestly, then hit them with this designed QB blast when they start flowing to the HB.
