RPO Zone Peek pairs an inside zone run with a peek route package that lets the QB read the box count before committing to the handoff. On the backside the QB has a quick throw window built off the zone action, typically a slant or peek route from the slot that attacks the vacated area if a linebacker steps up to fill the run fit. This is a true RPO, giving you a zone beater against light boxes and a numbers advantage against defenses that sell out to stop the run.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety shell often means the defense is stacking the box which favors the peek throw over the handoff. Look at linebacker depth before the snap, linebackers sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage are keying run and will vacate the peek throwing lane. Post-snap, track any user-controlled linebacker or lurk defender spying the backfield, if they stay home instead of triggering downhill the peek route is likely to be taken away. This play struggles against disciplined defenses running read-and-react zone schemes where linebackers stay square and do not overcommit to run action. Heavy blitz packages with an extra defender crashing the edge or A-gap can beat this play if the QB is slow to identify the box count and hesitates on the RPO decision.
Usage Tips
Count the box pre-snap and if the defense has six or more defenders in the box, key the peek route immediately instead of forcing the zone run into a stacked front.
Watch the second level linebackers at the snap, if they crash down hard on the zone action that is your green light to pull and throw the peek window before it closes.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since the defense is more likely to respect the run and open up the RPO throw.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Fk Leak Outside Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys run fits, then come back to RPO Zone Peek to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
Sequence it with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Read Bubble to keep defenders guessing between bubble screens and the peek throw, forcing user linebackers to hesitate on every snap.
