Breakdown

Outside Zone from Shotgun Doubles Offset is a pure zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and the offensive line flowing laterally to stretch the edge before working vertically. The diagram shows the entire front five blocking as a unit toward the play side with the TE and outside receivers not shown running routes, confirming this is a downhill zone scheme rather than an RPO or play-action look. The primary read is the frontside cutback lane: the ball carrier presses the play side, reads the block flow of the tackle and TE, then decides between bouncing outside, bending to the alley, or cutting back against overpursuing linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down the line before the snap, since disciplined edge defenders who stay square are the primary counter to outside zone. Identify if the defense is running a 3-4 odd front with two off ball linebackers reading gaps, which forces the runner to press wider and could get cut off by fast flowing linebackers. Key the play side safety and see if he is rotating down into the box, since an extra defender in the run fit can blow up the stretch before it develops. Post-snap, track whether the defensive tackles are two-gapping or one-gapping, because heavy penetration up front kills the zone landmarks and forces an immediate cutback read. Look for user-controlled linebackers spying the mesh point rather than reading blocks, since a smart user defender can jump the cutback lane and erase the backside cut.

Usage Tips

Run this out of neutral early down situations like first and ten to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the set.

Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a pass concept like Double Slants or FL Spot instead of forcing the run.

Use manual motion with the HB or shift the formation to see if linebackers flow with the motion, which tells you if you are facing man or zone principles up front.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert Bus or RPO Zone X Smoke in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the outside zone stretch and the quick perimeter throw off the same look.

Take control of the play side tackle or TE if you need to manually seal a hard-charging edge defender, since user blocking can be the difference between a five yard gain and a home run cutback.
