Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Offset that uses jet motion across the backfield to freeze linebackers before the quarterback boots outside the tackle box. The diagram shows a single route breaking flat across the formation from the offset side and then bending vertically up the sideline, essentially a flat-to-go combo built off the run fake. Blocking is a rollout protection scheme with the offensive line sliding to the play side to wall off the edge while the QB works the boundary on this designed run pass action. The primary read progression is the flat route first as an outlet check down, then the vertical breakout route up the sideline as the boot develops and the QB gains width.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he steps up to fill against the jet motion instead of maintaining pass drop depth the boot action has already won. Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high shell with the safety cheating toward the run fake indicates man coverage on the outside and sets up the vertical breakout route. Watch the play side cornerback leverage, outside leverage invites the flat route underneath while inside leverage tells the QB to push the ball up the sideline immediately. Cover 3 with a hard flowing linebacker crew gets gashed by this concept since the boot outruns the zone rotation to that side. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the backside edge can collapse the pocket before the rollout fully develops, so quick pocket awareness and a hitch step are needed if the user rush comes unblocked.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, this opens up the boot lane for the QB to escape the pocket. Call this on early downs when defenses expect inside zone or jet sweep from this personnel, the play action freeze is most effective against aggressive run fits. Watch for man coverage on the outside receiver, if the corner bites hard on the jet fake the go breakout route up the sideline is money against trail technique. Pair this with Jet Pass Fk Zone and PA Jet Sweep in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the motion tendency. If the safety rotates down pre-snap to defend the run, hot route the flat route into a quick out to punish the vacated shallow zone.
