Smash Pivot is a Cover 2 beater out of Shotgun Doubles Offset that stacks a high low read on the right side of the formation. The outside receiver runs a corner route while the slot receiver executes a pivot out to the flat, creating a classic smash concept that stretches the deep and short defenders vertically and horizontally. On the backside, the far slot runs a quick out and the outside receiver runs a deep post, giving the quarterback a two way go if the defense rotates coverage away from the smash side. The tight end runs a check release seam up the middle as the primary blocking assignment holds firm, making this a play action free progression pass rather than a designed run or screen.
Defensive Reads
Identify two high safeties before the snap since this play is built specifically to punish Cover 2 by putting the flat defender in a bind between the pivot and the corner route breaking outside of him. Watch the cornerback's alignment: if he sits in a soft zone with outside leverage, the corner route has a natural window to sit down behind him before the safety can rotate over. Key the flat or curl defender's first two steps after the snap, if he jumps the pivot route hard the quarterback should immediately reset to the corner route since the defender has vacated his zone drop. Man coverage with a single high safety is the toughest shell against this concept since the corner route has no natural soft spot and the backside post can be taken away by inside help, so be ready to check the play down to the tight end's seam release. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge on the smash side since the quick pivot route can act as a built in answer, but a delayed blitz from depth can collapse the pocket before the corner route develops.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells since the corner over flat combo attacks the seam between the cornerback and safety. Pre snap, check the safety depth: if both safeties are deep at 10 plus yards you have a green light to hit the corner route over the top of the flat defender. If the cornerback is playing a hard press look, hot route the pivot to a quick out to beat the jam and get an instant answer versus man coverage. Pair this play with Fade Smash or Double Slants earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying underneath and flat routes, then dial up Smash Pivot to punish that same look with the corner route shot. Against zone heavy defenses, work the smash side first, but if the flat defender sinks with the pivot route and the corner is capped, look back to the backside post for an explosive play. Rotate this into red zone calls near the goal line since the corner to flat stretch is difficult for a single high safety to cover in a compressed field.
