Defensive Reads

Watch the corner over the outside receiver at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route without help, the crossing route underneath should come open immediately. Key the safety rotation post-snap, Cover 2 safeties who jump the corner route leave the deep post wide open on the backside. Against Cover 4, look for the corner to press and trail the corner route through the traffic created by the crossing receiver, this is where user-controlled defenders often lose contain and get picked. If the defense shows a single high safety with man coverage underneath, expect the crossing route to be the first read since there is no zone defender sitting in the shallow window. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, throw the corner route first before the crossing route clears since the corner defender has to fight through traffic.

Hot route the backside out into a deep comeback if you are facing heavy zone drop coverage, giving you a built-in answer to sitting linebackers and boundary corners.
