Mtn HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Doubles Offset is a designed HB screen with a slip release out of the backfield, protected by two deep clear out routes. The two outside receivers run vertical stems, one dig back across the middle and the other stemming up and breaking outside toward the sideline, dragging linebackers and safeties away from the box. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field while the HB releases to the flat, slips behind the offensive line's screen block, and the primary read is simply getting the ball to the HB in space and letting blockers set the alley.

Defensive Reads

Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat or lurking near the line of scrimmage, since they can jump the screen before blockers get set. Key the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side, if they crash hard upfield on the snap the screen has a clean lane, if they sit and read they can blow it up. Man coverage with aggressive corners jumping the drag routes is a good indicator the screen will hit clean since those defenders are occupied. Zone coverage with linebackers sitting in short zones or spying the backfield is the biggest threat, disciplined defenders who stay home on the HB kill this play quickly. Blitz heavy fronts with fast edge pressure can actually beat the screen if the rush gets to the HB before the blockers arrive, so respect delayed blitzes and nano blitz packages when facing this concept.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and short when the defense is showing an aggressive front or blitz look presnap. Check the middle of the field before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the clear out routes will hold them and the screen has room to develop underneath. Use motion presnap to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the HB motion you are likely facing man coverage which slows down screen recognition. Pair this with straight dropback passing concepts like Mesh Spot or X Dagger earlier in a series so the defense keys on the pass rush and bites hard, setting up the screen as a change of pace. Avoid calling this into heavy zone blitz packages since extra rushers can beat the screen blockers to the flat before the HB gets the ball.
