Breakdown

HB Punch is a Power Run out of Shotgun Doubles Offset with 11 personnel, showing the HB aligned slightly offset from the QB with two receivers stacked wide on each side. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block, creating a power gap look with the TE and offside tackle sealing the edge while the RB reads the pulling guard for his crease. This is a downhill gap scheme run, not a pass or RPO concept, and the primary read is the running back identifying the pulling guard's block and pressing the designed hole before bouncing outside if the alley closes.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, since stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat the pulling guard to the point of attack and kill this run in the backfield. Identify one high safety looks, which usually means an extra run defender in the box that can outnumber the blocking scheme on the play side. Watch for a user-controlled defensive end crashing hard down inside, since that forces the puller to adjust and can spring a cutback lane if the backside is not accounted for. Zone shells with linebackers sitting flat footed at the snap are the easiest to run against, since they are late to fill gaps against the power concept. Aggressive nano blitzes off the edge or A gap can disrupt this play immediately, so scout for pre-snap blitz indicators like walked up linebackers or safety rotation toward the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Run HB Punch on early downs when the defense shows a light box or a two high shell that suggests they are respecting the pass first out of Doubles Offset.

Watch pre-snap for defenders stacked over the play side guard, since that indicates a possible A gap plug that can blow up the pulling lineman before he reaches his target.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to identify if the linebackers are flowing hard to the strength, which opens up the backside cutback lane for the HB.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on gap versus zone blocking, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.

Mix in RPO Zone Alert Bus or RPO Peek Waggle after running Punch a few times to keep the linebackers honest and slow their downhill trigger on run reads.
