Breakdown

RPO Zone Alert Bus out of Shotgun Doubles Offset pairs an inside zone run with a bubble/flat alert on the perimeter, giving the quarterback a true run-pass conflict read on a flowing linebacker or overhang defender. The offensive line executes zone blocking to the play side while the slot receiver runs an alert route (bubble screen) that the QB can throw off the read defender's leverage. This is a true RPO built to punish light boxes and aggressive linebacker flow, with the primary progression being: read the box count and flow defender first, then work to the alert route if he crashes down on the run.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the play side linebacker immediately after the snap, if he crashes hard to stop the zone run the bubble alert route will be wide open behind him. Check safety depth pre-snap, a two-high shell with soft corners invites the run read while a single-high safety rotation often signals extra run support in the box. Beware user-controlled defenders spying the bubble route or sitting in a shallow zone drop, since a smart human defender can bait the RPO by showing run fit then jumping the throw. Look for overload blitz packages or nano blitzes off the edge, since fast pressure can disrupt the mesh point before the QB reads the alert defender. Man coverage on the outside with no help over the top on the alert receiver is a green light to throw, but tight man coverage on the slot with a linebacker sitting underneath can shut this play down completely.

Usage Tips

Count the box pre-snap and only hand it off if you have numbers advantage or a clean run fit, otherwise trust the alert throw to the flowing defender's vacated space.

Identify if the defense is in a two-high shell with light box, this is when the inside zone hits hardest since the alert defender usually has to respect the run.

Use the RPO Zone X Smoke and RPO Peek Waggle from this set as complementary calls so defenses cannot key on one alert side, forcing conflict for linebackers snap after snap.

This play shines on early downs and short yardage (2nd and short, 3rd and 2 or less) where defenses commit extra bodies to stop the run.

If the CB or slot defender sits on the bubble alert route, pull it back down as a zone run and trust your line to win the numbers game inside.
