Breakdown

Double Slant Spot is a Cover 3 beater out of Shotgun Doubles Offset that pairs two quick slants from the boundary with a Spot concept to the trips side. The backside receiver runs a slant, the inline slot runs a slant into the vacated middle, while the trips side stacks a corner route over a spot/hitch and a flat route underneath to hold defenders low. Primary progression starts with the flat to spot read, then works backside to the double slant window, attacking any zone that opens up between the linebacker and safety drops.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first since a hard sink into the flat opens the spot route sitting underneath for an easy pitch and catch. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he bails hard to cover the deep corner route the double slant window on the backside stays wide open. Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, that shell signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and this play is designed to exploit both with the slant combo. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, an aggressive lurk can jump the inside slant, so be ready to work the spot or flat as your outlet. Man coverage with no help over the top on the corner route is the biggest bust, since a blown assignment there turns into a shot play down the sideline.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for two high safeties versus single high, since the corner and slant combo on the trips side punishes Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenders who sink too deep. Use the flat route as your first hot read against blitz looks to get the ball out before pressure arrives off the edge. If the defense shows man coverage, prioritize the slants since they create instant separation against outside leverage corners. Pair this play with Double Slants and Spot Dbl Slant in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing on which side the double slant window will open. Best used on 3rd and short to medium since the underneath routes give you multiple high percentage completions before the corner route stretches the field vertically.
