Look for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow zone, since he can jump the slant route if the quarterback stares it down. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play gets exploited on the backside slant against a slower linebacker or safety in trail technique.

Use this play on early downs or third and short when defenses are likely sitting in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2.

Read the flat defender first since the spot concept is designed to option him off with the flat route and pivot underneath.

If you see man coverage pre-snap, hot route the backside slant into a fade or go route to isolate a corner one on one.

Pair this call with Double Slants or Spot Dbl Slant earlier in a series so the defense has to respect both the quick slant window and the deeper spot concept.

Snap the ball quickly against blitz-heavy defenses since the flat and slant routes get open fast and give the quarterback a safety valve against pressure.
